SexTile + Automatic Brought Peak Mayhem to Tangent Gallery
SexTile + Automatic is a dream combination for a tour and a stop at our unique Tangent Gallery last Saturday and made it one of shows that will be the brought up in those "I was there!" conversations for years to come. Johnstonsons, local post punk rockers, got to be the band that will say "we opened that show!" And a great opener they were, with impassioned vocals and guitar. Automatic were next with an excellent set of their music that grooves along to synth effects and nice vocal exchanges. Their sound reminds me of a unique mix early Gary Numan backed by Stereolab melodies. SexTile, who have played Detroit a couple times before have an aggressive ebm sound, think electroclash crossed with Nitzer Ebb. The male / female exchange vocals supplied chants and raps that quickly brought the crowd to a frenzied state with arms gong high in the air and bodies moving along to beat.
